The Network Administrator Job Description – Does It Suit You?

The network administrator job description is simple enough, but the actual implementation of the role is not. A network administrator is someone at the highest level of a company, responsible for the continued working and performance of the computer network. The administrator is also responsible for what can be one of the greatest headaches of all, security. It is the administrator who assigns IP addresses, who oversees the security of the data contained on the network, and even the security of the data on any individual's machine.

Whenever there is the risk that private data could fall into the wrong hands, there is an awesome responsibility on the person who is overseeing the whole operation and making sure everything is carried out to plan. Depending on the nature of the business the company is involved in, it could be a catastrophic occurrence for information to fall into the wrong hands. The setting of passwords, the ensuring that these passwords are kept safe and not available to anyone seeking to abuse the system, and the creation of the system by which data is stored in password protected files, are all the responsibility of the network administrator.

The network manager's job description involves creating the system by which all of the computers in an organization are connected together, and then making sure that the optimum system which has been designed is maintained. Problems with the network may be trivial, in that it could just be one machine which is affected, or it could be something far more serious. A problem which prevents data being transferred between one department and another, for example, could cause serious losses until it can be restored.

The network administrator will rarely, if ever, liaise with the operatives using the system. When someone has a problem with the system, whatever that problem is, they should be able to immediately contact a help desk. This help desk will have the primary responsibility for sending someone to the operative to repair the problem. Only if this normal procedure is unable to produce a result will senior management become involved.

In short, the network administrator is concerned with the network as it affects everyone who uses it, and not the network as it affects one person. By keeping the focus on the overall picture, the administrator is able to see when faults and potential faults are likely to cause the most trouble. The correct action can then be taken, in the interests of all users, even if that means temporary dislocation for one individual user. Being able to take this “global” approach to problems is the surest sign that the manager truly understands the network administrator job description.
